CROW'S NEST MILITARY ARTIFACTS ASSOCIATION (CNMAA)
The CNMAA was incorporated in
1987 for three purposes;
(1) To own all the historic
artifacts of the Club as distinct from other Club property.
(2) To maintain, protect and
document the artifacts.
(3) To become a charitable
organisation and raise funds to help in the protection and maintenance of the
artifacts.
The CNMAA was legally established
as an organisation distinct from and at arms-length from the Crow's Nest
Officer's Club. Robert Andrews drew up the letters of incorporation. Outside
Directors can be appointed to the CNMAA, although the majority of Directors
must be Crow's Nest Members. The CNMAA has its own Membership fees and maintains
financial records and reports to Revenue Canada.
In 1988 the CNMAA got off to a good start by obtaining a grant under the "Soiree 88" program
sponsored by the City of St. John's to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of
Municipal Government in Newfoundland and Labrador. This program assisted in
framing, repairing and photographing the artifacts, as well as other functions,
and required a contribution in volunteer labour. A 27-page booklet was prepared
which included newspaper clippings and other material concerning the surrender
of the German submarine U-190 and the subsequent installation of the periscope
into the Club. The "Hesperus" ships badge was presented by the
British Government to the CNMAA in recognition of the role played by the Club
in serving the Royal Navy in WWII. The CNMAA hosted a reception in which the Hon
Peter Morrison, UK Minister of State for Energy made the presentation, (photo

For most of the time since 1988
the Club has undertaken the responsibility for the maintenance of the
artifacts. Much has been achieved. The Naval Officers Association of
Newfoundland donated funds to clean the gun-shield plaques, our original, very
unique WWII items. The wall displays of
photos and badges have been better arranged and firmly attached in many areas.
Under the direction of Norm Jeffrey, the CNMAA President, and others the
periscope has been taken down, restored and replaced. A record has been kept of
each new addition to the collection and this information is being catalogued
for computer processing. During the tenure of former
President Doug Tilley the CNMAA achieved the status of charitable institution
and Former Secretary/Treasurer Eric Harvey maintained the necessary annual
reports to Revenue Canada, (Graham Skanes is the Sec./Treas.) The
Executive of the CNMAA expects to continue the good work.
In 2006, the CNMAA, in conjunction with Heritage Canada, began posting pictures and descriptions of our artifacts on line. The collection can be viewed on the Canadian Heritage Website by clicking this link. The work continues and, with the assistance of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Heritage Canada and Veterans Affairs Canada, the website will expand to display all of our artifacts as well as a virtual communities memories program, highlighting the Battle of the Atlantic, the significance of the Port of St. John's and the origins of the Crow's Nest Officers' Club.
